When I was told that I would have to find a rhetorical object that represents and relates to me the most, it took me a few hours to make what I considered to be a fairly difficult decision. I spent most of the afternoon looking at every object around me as well as thinking about any object I thought would fit. After a few hours, I found myself getting off task and playing on my phone the whole time. Eventually I came to the conclusion that the object that I believe fits my identity best is Apple’s exceedingly popular iPhone.
John Casey from Sacramento, California created Apple’s famous iPhone with a significant amount of help from Apple’s current chief executive officer (CEO) Steve Jobs. Apple’s introduction of the iPhone was an introduction to the entire world of a new type of cell phone. Before the introduction of the iPhone, Apple produced the incredibly popular iPod that skyrocketed in popularity. Eventually after the iPod was out on the market for quite some time and continued to be successful, the idea of combining the iPod and a cell phone began. John Casey argued that large majorities of people carry a cell phone and an iPod with them most of the time. The idea of combining the two objects then began to grow.
An iPhone combines three different devices into one object. An iPhone offers an iPod, a cell phone, and also Internet access allows the iPhone to act like miniature computer. The phone offers the capability of all three objects in one object. The introduction of the iPhone led to the expansion of smart phones and the development of new technology, including the iPad. The first version of the iPhone was released on June 29, 2007 with two different models the 4GB and the 8GB. With the price set a $599.00 for the 8GB and $499.00 for the 4GB there became an issue with the billing. On August 11, 2007, an iPhone purchaser, Justine Ezarik, received a three-hundred page phone bill sent in a box. She later went on to created a video that was posted on YouTube highlighting the actual size of the bill, not the amount due. Apple and AT&T came back with a “price protection” rebate on September 5, 2007. This stated that those who have purchase an iPhone in the fourteen day period before the September 5 announcement were eligible for a two hundred dollar rebate. The company’s also discontinued the 4GB model and the 8GB model price was cut by a third. With the customer’s complaints, CEO Steve Jobs wrote in a letter to iPhone customers that everyone who purchased an iPhone at a higher price “and who is not receiving a rebate or other consideration” would receive a one-hundred dollar credit toward the purchase of any product sold in Apple’s retail or online stores.
Almost a year later, July 11, 2008, the iPhone 3G was released. The 3G version supports faster 3G data speed and assisted global positioning system (GPS). Within another year the 3GS was announced and released on June 17, 2009. Having most of the same features as the 3G but it has improved performance, installed a camera with higher resolution and video capability, and voice control. The 3G iPhone now sells for one-sixth the price of the original 8GB iPhone when it first arrived on the market, in the U.S. it costs only $99.00 rather than the original $599.00.
With the outrageous sale numbers, it shows that soon the iPhone is going to be another daily object. Everyone will soon own one because it will become that easy to not only have but also afford. Makes on-the-go business men or woman be more organized with everything just a touch away and all on the same device. In the last few years for Apple to come out with three different versions of one of the most state of the art cell phones shows that technology is advancing at a fast rate, there is more to be introduced in the years to come.
When the iPhone first appeared, younger generations were more in tune with the object. This new advancement made most of all high school and college students want to own one. The iPhone was the new “it” object of the year. As the years pass there are older generations slowly coming to develop the skills to use the phone and the other features. Most people that fall in that age group have no idea the concept of how this device works, but as soon as they own one and begin to feel comfortable with the advancement, they will slowly realize just how important this technology really is. With the ability to stay connected on the phone and search the browser makes it easy for business. For instance, when having a meeting over the phone and the other party sends a file with charts and information, the iPhone lets you look through your mail and read all the information while still having a conversation.
There are so many different apps that help you stay organized and ones that are just for fun. From making a reservation at a favorite restaurant to playing that best game, there is always something for everyone on this device, and it has truly revolutionized the phone companies. With ads everywhere from the computer to television, everyone wants this product. It shows how multifunction and convenient it is to use this device with just a touch of your finger. It does persuade me to buy and own this phone, so I did, I own my own iPhone. I would not say that it made life easier, but it definitely became my everyday object that I carry. I am always searching for new apps and I really learn something new about it on a day-to-day basis. I recommend to all and if the other consumers think that a normal 2 way phone is perfect for them, once they try the iPhone, any version the 3G or the 3GS, they will be thoroughly interested in their own ownership.
